What is Phosphatidylserine (PS)?

Phosphatidylserine is a phospholipid compound derived from soy lecithin that plays an essential role in cell membrane composition and inter-cellular communication. Phosphatidylserine is a major structural component of neural membranes where it assists in the conduction of electrical impulses and facilitates the activity of neurotransmitters involved in learning, memory and mood. These properties make Phosphatidylserine an ideal supplement for the support of cognitive function.

Phosphatidylserine has been found in combination with other phospholipids (phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, and phosphatidylinositol), in trace amounts in commercial lecithins and derived from cow brains.

Phospholipids are molecules containing both amino and fatty acids found in every cell membrane within our bodies. Phosphatidylserine includes amino and fatty acids such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The fatty acids include omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acid molecules—essential for life. Actually, phosphatidylserine is universally present in living things from the most simple to the most complex. It is present in every one of our cells. Phosphatidylserine has many known functions throughout all of our tissues and organs, but is most important as the key building block for the billions of cells that make up our brain. Numerous studies have suggested the impact of PS on specific neurotransmitters in the brain including  acetylcholine, serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine. Many researchers also agree that all of these neurochemical systems are involved in age-related cognitive functioning.

How Does Phosphatidylserine Work?

Phosphatidylserine enables your brain cells to metabolize glucose and to release and bind with neurotransmitters, all of which is important tolearning, memory and other cognitive functions. Phosphatidylserine increases communication between cells in your brain by increasing the number of membrane receptor sites for receiving messages. Phosphatidylserine modulates the fluidity of cell membranes—essential to your brain cells' ability to send and receive chemical communication. Scientific studies demonstrate that phosphatidylserine restores the brain's supply and output of acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter so important to memory, and so may turn back the clock in an aging brain.

Phosphatidylserine can increase the availability of endogenous (that which is created within your cells) choline for de novo synthesis and release (while similar treatments with phosphatidylcholine had no effect).

Phosphatidylserine also stimulates your brain to produce dopamine and this is likely why patients diagnosed with clinical depression have shown marked improvement in their symptoms as a result of taking phosphatidylserine daily. Reduced dopamine levels are also thought to contribute to attention deficit disorder and this natural substance has proven to be an effective therapeutic agent for ADD and ADHD.

Studies examining athletes involved in cycling, weight training and endurance running show that phosphatidylserine canspeed recovery, prevent muscle soreness and help athletes to feel their best during the rigors of training.

We also know that phosphatidylserine is important in bone matrix formation, testicular function, beat coordination of the heart, hormone secretion by the adrenal glands and cell repair and removal by the immune system.

Modern science has only begun to understand how important phosphatidylserine is to our bodies. After all, it's present in every type of cell in our body and the membrane proteins that it activates are important in all cells.

Health benefits of taking Phosphatidylserine supplements:

1.Enhance Memory,cognition and learning ability.

Memory is of course essential to the learning process, so any supplement that enhances memory will enhance learning as well. This is because it will be easier to figure out new skills if you can remember all information associated with them. phosphatidylserine has also been shown to support learning directly due to a positive effect it has on attention span and concentration.

Learning is the one thing that keeps you sharp and promotes a varied and exciting lifestyle. Bolstering memory can have a large number of positive effects. Examples include; enhanced work potential, and an enhanced interaction with others due to increased memory.

2.Promote sports nutrition performance

Phosphatidylserine has been demonstrated to speed up recovery, prevent muscle soreness, improve well-being, and might possess ergogenic properties in athletes involved in cycling, weight training and endurance running. Soy-PS, in a dose dependent manner (400 mg), has been reported to be an effective supplement for combating exercise-induced stress by blunting the exercise-induced increase in cortisol levels.PS supplementation promotes a desirable hormonal balance for athletes and might attenuate the physiological deterioration that accompanies overtraining and/or overstretching. In recent studies, PS has been shown to enhance mood in a cohort of young people during mental stress and to improve accuracy during tee-off by increasing the stress resistance of golfers.

3.Fighting Mental Lapses from Aging

It is well noted that as we get older, many of us will experience an appreciable decline in mental ability, such as recalling friends’ names, maintaining concentration on the task at hand and even processing words. As one begins to lose these higher-level cognitive functions, the impact on self-esteem, productivity and well being are also affected. It’s a sad truth that as you age, your mental faculties may be less acute than they were when you were younger. The general cognition enhancement effect of Phosphatidylserine will help even the score with any declining mental facility that might occur due to aging.

The mental difficulties of aging are, for many, one of the most unfortunate aspects of getting older. Taking a supplement or battery of supplements to keep these effects in check could help reverse these natural effects.

Taking supplements and performing activities to promote mental health can give you the mind of a younger person. There are few things more disruptive to life than losing memory and general cognition. These are often key elements in your identity as a whole, so it’s essential to protect them.

Due to the many positive effects of Phosphatidylserine, it can often be a great supplement to add to your toolbox for the protection of your mental health.

Over 3,000 published research papers and more than 60 clinical trials have established that phosphatidylserine can rejuvenate your brain cell membranes and thereby:

strengthen your memory

increase vigilance and attention,

boost learning,

increase mental acuity,

intensify your concentration,

relieve depression and improve mood,

inhibit exercise and stress induced increases in cortisol,

decrease stress—whether you are young or old.

Dosage of Phosphatidylserine (PS) supplement

Many supplement fans are curious how much Phosphatidylserine (PS) to take. Well, there is no set intake amount. Different people have different dosages. The below is for your reference only.

Start with 300 mg of PS per day for 1-3 months (with meals), then take 100 mg (one softgel) per day for general health maintenance

For mood problems, start at 400 mg per day for 1 month or longer—for best results, take with at least 200 mg of EPA and 200 mg of DHA found in fish oil

Take up to 500 mg per day for better results

Athletes may require 800 mg per day to blunt cortisol
