What is Black Cohosh Extract powder?

Black Cohosh, according to wikipedia, is a species of flowering plant of the family Ranunculaceae. It is native to eastern North America from the extreme south of Ontario to central Georgia, and west to Missouri and Arkansas. (known as both Actaea racemosa and Cimicifuga racemosa) Black Cohosh has many other common names include black snakeroot, bugbane, bugwort, rattleroot, rattletop, rattleweed, and macrotys. Preparations of black cohosh are made from its roots and rhizomes (underground stems), and the most common specification of black cohosh is 2.5% triterpenoid saponins, or 2.5% Triterpene Glycosides.

Chemical constituents of Black Cohosh Extract powder

Black Cohosh is the colloquial term for the plant Actaea racemosa, also referred to as Cimicifuga racemosa. The supplement contains the dried rhizomes of the plant, and the plant itself is a coarse woodland perennial herb with a thick, knotted root system and growing up to 1-2.5m in height with compound, pinnate leaves up to 7cm in length. The plant is native to North America, spreading from Canada to Georgia.

As a herbal product, Black Cohosh contains a variety of bioactive compounds such as: Cycloartanol compounds such as acteol and actein, cimigenol and cimicifugoside; these tend to be seen as the active ingredients and are sometimes referred to simply as triterpene glycosides. There are about 50 of them. Flavonoids such as Formononectin;Roots contain triterpene glycosides: 26-deoxyactein, 23-epi-26-deoxyactein (27-deoxyactein or actein), cimicifugoside (cimigoside), cimifugoside M, cimiracemosides, and others; organic acids and esters (2-hexylcyclopropaneoctanoic acid, caffeic, fukinolic acid cimicifugic acids, ferulic acid, isoferulic acid, and others). Other constituents reported to be present include salicylic acid, cimigonite, tannin, and volatile oils.

How Does Black Cohosh Extract powder Work?

Black Cohosh Extract powder is used for medicinal purposes. Black Cohosh Extract powder contains several chemicals that might have effects in the body. Some of these chemicals work on the immune system and might affect the body’s defenses against diseases. Some might help the body to reduce inflammation. Other chemicals in Black Cohosh Extract powder might work in nerves and in the brain. These chemicals might work similar to another chemical in the brain called serotonin. Scientists call this type of chemical a neurotransmitter because it helps the brain send messages to other parts of the body.
Black Cohosh Extract powder also seems to have some effects similar to the female hormone, estrogen. In some parts of the body, black cohosh might increase the effects of estrogen. In other parts of the body, black cohosh might decrease the effects of estrogen. Estrogen itself has various effects in different parts of the body. Estrogen also has different effects in people at different stages of life. Black cohosh should not be thought of as an “herbal estrogen” or a substitute for estrogen. It is more accurate to think of it as an herb that acts similar to estrogen in some people.

How black cohosh works exactly isn't understood. It was once thought to have estrogen-like activity, but there is growing evidence that it does not.

Benefits of taking Black Cohosh Extract powder

Black Cohosh Extract powder was used by Native Americans as a traditional folk remedy for womens' health conditions, such as menstrual cramps and hot flashes, arthritis, muscle pain, sore throat, cough and indigestion. The juice of the plant was used as an insect repellent and was made into a salve and applied to snake bites. There are many benefits of black cohosh found in the modern era. It is available in many forms such as dry capsules or tea bags. It’s most famous claim to fame is in the treatment of menopausal symptoms for women. The key benefits of taking Black Cohosh Extract powder supplement are summarized as below:

1.Natrural treatment of Relieving Menopause Discomfort Naturally

Black cohosh is a popular herbal supplement for women, reputed to treat dozens of diseases and conditions of the female endocrine system, including menstrual disorders, pregnancy-related conditions, and many of the common discomforts associated with menopause.

The pharmacology of black cohosh is not fully understood, and its relationship with the female body is complex. Black cohosh stimulates blood-flow to the pelvis and directly interacts with seratonin levels. Also, like many plants, black cohosh contains phytoestrogens-- plant compounds that mimic the role of estrogen in the body. Together, the unique compounds in black cohosh form a natural defense against many of the unpleasant effects associated with menopause

Today, black cohosh is used primarily as a nutritional supplement for hot flashes, mood swings, night sweats, vaginal dryness, Migraines, Depression, Osteoporosis, and other symptoms that can occur during menopause, as well as for menstrual cramps and bloating.

2. Alleviation of inflammation caused due to arthritis

The anti-inflammatory properties of black cohosh have the ability to provide relief from pain associated with arthritis. Two types of arthritis from which the plant can provide pain relief are osteo-arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Black Cohosh Extract powder can be relatively effective when combined with other plants like willow bark, poplar bark, sarsaparilla and guaiacum raisin.

3.Prevention of bone loss and enhanced healing in osteoporosis

Black cohosh contains plant based estrogens called phytoestrogens that have the ability to prevent the loss of bone. This is a key symptom associated with osteoporosis. Hence, the activity of black cohosh in those with osteoporosis can help prevent bones from becoming fragile. It can also reduce the related risk of fractures. Another benefit of consuming black cohosh is that it can enhance bone healing when they are fractured due to osteoporosis. Its effects are most significant when consumed during the early stages of osteoporosis.

4.Lowered risk of breast cancer

Another benefit of black cohosh is its ability to lower the risk of breast cancer by almost 60%. The plant is capable of doing this, as it contains phytoestrogens that can reduce the negative effects of estrogen. One such effect is its tendency to encourage the development and growth of cancer that is hormone receptor positive. By using Black Cohosh Extract powder, the phytoestrogens in it can reduce the risk of this type of cancer.

Additional health benefits of black cohosh

• Black Cohosh Extract powder can be used to bring down the levels of bad cholesterol – low density lipoprotein – in the blood.
