What is Damiana?
According to Wikipedia Turnera diffusa,
known as damiana, is a shrub native to southwestern Texas in the United States,
Central America, Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean. It belongs to the
family Passifloraceae.
Damiana is a relatively small shrub that produces small, aromatic flowers. It blossoms in early to late summer and is followed by fruits that taste similar to figs. The shrub is said to have a strong spice-like odor somewhat like chamomile, due to the essential oils present in the plant. The leaves have traditionally been made into a tea and an incense which was used by native people of Central and South America for its relaxing effects. Spanish missionaries first recorded that the Mexican Indians drank Damiana tea mixed with sugar for use as an aphrodisiac.
Chemical constituents of Damiana Extract
The chemical composition of
damiana is complex and all of the components have not been completely identified.
However, the known make-up is 0.5-1% volatile oil, flavonoids, gonzalitosin,
arbutin, tannin and damianin (a brown bitter substance). It also contains
essential oils (containing cineol, cymol, pinene), cyanogenic glycosides,
thymol and trace amounts of phosphorus.

How
Does Damiana Work?
It is believed that damiana may function as an aromatase inhibitor. A 2008 study by the School of Pharmacy at the University of Mississippi investigated the anti-aromatase and estrogenic activity of damiana. Compounds isolated from the leaves were evaluated for aromatase activity using a tritiated-water release assay and for estrogenic activity using yeast estrogen screen assay. Damiana extract, and the extracted compounds pinocembrin and acacetin lessened aromatase activity. Other compounds, Apigenin 7-glucoside, Z-echinacin and pinocembrin showed estrogenic activity.
It was first used by the Mayans of Yucatan. They called it "mizib-coc," which means "plant for asthma." It was used for all pulmonary disorders, dizziness, vertigo, and as a general body cleanser.
Historically damiana has been used to
relieve anxiety, nervousness, and mild depression, especially if these symptoms
have a sexual component. The herb is also used as a general tonic to improve
wellness.Damiana has also been used traditionally to improve digestion and to
treat constipation, as in larger doses it is thought to have a mild laxative
effect.
Damiana leaves have been used as an aphrodisiac and to boost sexual potency by the native peoples of Mexico, including the Mayan Indians and is used for both male and female sexual stimulation, increased energy, asthma, depression, impotence and menstrual problems.
Damiana has stimulating properties and has
been used for nervousness, weakness, and exhaustion. It has been recommended
for increasing the sperm count in the male, strengthening the ovum in the
female, and helping to balance hormones in women.
Damiana is especially beneficial for
revitalizing the system, and has been used as a mild tonic laxative for
children. It has been said to one of the most popular and safest of plants
claimed to restore the natural sexual capacities and functions.
Some
applications
Aphrodisiac - any substance which arouses the sexual instinct.
Diuretic - Diuretics form a class of drugs which increase the volume of
urine produced by the kidneys. It can be used effectively to treat mild cases
of edema when kidney function is good and when the underlying abnormality of
cardiac function, capillary pressure, or salt retention is being corrected
simultaneously. Diuretics are not an appropriate treatment for edema caused by
inflammation of the kidneys, and are useless in cardiac edema associated with
advanced kidney insufficiency.
Emmenagogue - an agent which stimulate menstrual flow.
Laxative- an agent which acts to loosen the bowels; it is
therefore used to treat constipation. Laxatives may act by increasing
peristalsis by irritating the intestinal mucosa, lubricating the intestinal
walls, softening the bowel contents by increasing the amount of water in the
intestines, and increasing the bulk of the bowel content.
Stimulant - an agent that temporarily increases activity or physiological
processes. Stimulants may be classified according to the organ upon which they
act; for example, an intestinal stimulant is that which stimulates the
intestines.
Tonic - an agent which strengthens or tones.
