What is Cistanche?
Cistanche has been used for nearly 2,000
years to treat a wide range of medical issues. For example, it is commonly
prescribed by holistic medicine practitioners to treat problems relating to a
person's sexual health, such as impotence, fertility, premature ejaculation,
and menstrual cramps. In addition, it is believed to help with digestion and
relieve the most severe constipation. While cistanche is often used to treat
health problems simply because it has been reliably used for so many years, new
studies are emerging that indicate that science may support its use for an even
greater number of ailments.
Even in modern times, cistanche is one of the more popular plants used in Chinese medicine, where it is know as rou cong rong. Although it typically grows in Asia and the Middle East, its use has become increasingly popular across the globe. As a result, some botanists feel that the herb is becoming more difficult to find in native habitats. While it is not considered endangered, it is being monitored, particularly in regard to its use in global commerce.
The dried fleshy stems of Cistanche
deserticola in known in China as Rou Congrong. In Japan, the species used is
Cistanche salsa. Cistanche also grows in Mongolia. According to one Chinese
researcher, "Rou Cong-rong" (Herba Cistanchis) is one of the commonly
used drugs in Chinese traditional medicine. It is used to reinforce the vital
function of kidney, especially that of the sexual organs and induce laxation,
for the treatment of impotence, premature ejaculation in men, infertility,
morbid leukorrhea, profuse metrorrhagia in women, and chronic constipation in
the aged."

Benefits of taking Cistanche Extract supplements:
1. Sexual Health
Part of the popularity revolving around cistanche is its use to treat problems related to sexual health. Even in Western cultures, many people drink tea or consume powder extracts made with the herb. People believe that it can increase a woman's fertility and that it is particularly helpful for women having difficulty conceiving. Many men use the herb to treat impotence and premature ejaculation as well.
2. Constipation
Typically, it is reserved for people with chronic constipation, such as older individuals, postpartum women, and people who are bedridden. It is often combined with other herbs, such as seeds from the hemp plant, especially when used to treat digestive issues such as constipation.
3. Immune system
New scientific studies are showing evidence of the herbs
effectiveness. For example, some studies show that cistanche can be used to
fight aging. This also has made the herb very popular in both Eastern and
Western cultures. In addition, it is thought to prevent fatigue and increase
energy. Some studies show that it may improve memory and enhance the immune
system as well. Many people believe the herb will work as an anti-inflammatory
and that it can even help decrease blood pressure.
The traditional uses of Cistanche have evolved over nearly 2,000 years. Cistanche is utilized in formulas mainly for tonifying the kidney and used for disorders associated with aging and decline of kidney essence. The whole plant of Cistanche tubulosa is used medically as a remedy for diarrhea. Cistanche was reported to increase the antioxidative action in vivo significantly and prevent lipoperoxidative damages in tissues.
Cistanche
studies
>Anti-nociceptive and anti-inflammatory
activity caused by Cistanche deserticola in rodents.
Lin LW. China Medical College, 91 Hsieh
Shih Road, Taichung, Taiwan, ROC.
J Ethnopharmacol. 2002 Dec;83(3):177-82.
In the present study, the rhizomes of
Cistanche deserticola (Orobanchaceae) were extracted with 50% ethanol and
isolated orderly by ethyl acetate, n-butanol and water. The analgesic and
anti-inflammatory effects of Cistanche deserticola extract and three layers
were evaluated in several animal models. Cistanche deserticola extracts
effectively inhibited writhing response induced by 1% acetic acid and biphasic
licking responses caused by 1% formalin, and also reduced the edema induced by
1% carrageenan but not zymosan. Furthermore, the butanolic and aqueous layers
of Cistanche deserticola extract not only reduced the pain induced by acetic
acid and formalin, but also decreased the edema that induced by carrageenan.
Effects of the butanolic layer of Cistanche deserticola extract are better than
that of the aqueous layer. In addition, the effect of the butanolic layer of
Cistanche deserticola extract was not abolished by naloxone. These results
revealed that Cistanche deserticola has analgesic and anti-inflammatory
effects, and the butanolic and aqueous layers are mainly active constituents.
Furthermore, the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of the butanolic layer
of Cistanche deserticola extract were not related to opioid receptors and
immune system.
>Anti-oxidative action of the glycosides
of Cistanche in the tissue of mice
Wang X, Li L. Xinjiang Medical College,
Wulumuqi 830054.
Zhongguo Zhong Yao Za Zhi. 1998
Sep;23(9):554-5
OBJECTIVE: To study the anti-oxidative action of Cistanche in the tissues of mice. METHOD: Contents of superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA) and lipofuscin in the heart, liver, brain and kidney of mice were measured, using pyrogallic acid, thiobarbi turic acid (TBA) and fluorescent technique respectively. RESULT: It was found that the Cistanche (125 mg/kg, 250 mg/kg) had a significantly higher SOD activity and lower MDA contents in brain and kidney than that in control group. GCS(250 mg/kg) enhanced SOD activity in the heart and liver, declined contents of MDA and lipofuscin in all tissues. The results suggest that Cistanche could increase the antioxidative action in vivo significantly and prevent lipoperoxidative damages in tissues.
