What is Fucoidan (Brown Seaweed extract) ?
Fucoidan is a complex polysaccharide (sugar) and is the subject of over 900 scientific studies listed in the National Library of Medicine’s PubMed database. These and other studies reveal the amazing regenerative properties of fucoidan that affect nearly every system of the body. Fucoidan research is catching worldwide attention.
The benefits of fucoidan-rich seaweed have been noted for centuries. In Ancient Greece seaweed was recommended for diseases of the joints. In traditional Chinese medicine seaweed was used to ward off fever. And, in Victorian England seaweed was used to soften the skin. Today in modern medicine, brown seaweed is used to counteract aging, boost the immune system and treat hypertension.
Fucoidan (sulfated alpha-L-fucan) is a sulfated polysaccharide and found primarily in the cell walls of several species of brown seaweed, such as kombu, limu moui, wakame, hijiki, and bladderwrack.
Fucoidan substances are sulfated polysaccharides extracted from brown algae and have been studied for diverse biological activities.
Traditional Chinese medicine
In traditional Chinese medicine, brown seaweed such as kelp (Laminaria spp.) is a cold, salty herb which is said to reduce phlegm, soften and disperse hard accumulations or goiters, treat edema and cleanse the body of fat.
How does Fucoidan(Brown Seaweed extract) work?
Fucoidan is an innovative functional food
that activates the patient’s immune system and guides cancer cells to
apoptosis.
Science sees promise for fucoidan as a powerful support to the immune system. Fucoidan also enhances normal cell growth and division. Reports indicate that fucoidan supports normal liver and circulatory function. Seaweed experts believe that having a daily dose of seaweed sustains healthy body functions. People who eat fucoidan-rich limu moui on a regular basis report sustained energy* and feel support to the digestive system and as an aid to help support normal, pancreatic function.

Anti-Cancer
fucoidan does not attack cancer cells directly but causes them to "surrender." Of course, fucoidan does not promote apoptosis in normal cells. It only works on cancer cells. Therefore, fucoidan produces no side effects, unlike anticancer drugs, so the patient suffers no additional damage or discomfort.
Fucoidan, a compound found in brown
seaweed, may help prevent metastasis of lung cancer, according to a tissue
culture study published in the 2012 issue of the journal "PLoS One."
Kelp consumption may be partly responsible for lower rates of breast cancer and
other hormone-related cancers among Asian women, according to a study published
in the February 2005 issue of the "Journal of Nutrition." In the
laboratory animal study, kelp lengthened the menstrual cycle, decreased
estrogen levels and inhibited both estrogen and progesterone from binding to
receptors on cells. Researchers concluded that kelp supplements may help
modulate the endocrine system to help prevent some forms of cancer.
Immune
systemIn
June 2007, a ground-breaking study was
published in the Journal of Experimental Hematology. The study showed that
Marinova’s fucoidan product (labeled Maritech® extract) stimulated the release
of CD34+ stem cells from the bone marrow. These stem cells are precursors for
the development of human immune cells, or white blood cells, and the building
blocks of a functional immune defense system.
Another key finding of the study was that
the fucoidan product significantly elevated levels of a protein integral to an
effective immune response.
Skin
Health
There is a well-documented history of
studies investigating the activity of fucoidan in skin health. Fucoidans have a
diverse range of activities in regards to promoting skin health, including:
>Increasing skin thickness and
elasticity
>Inhibiting inflammation
>Lightening skin pigmentation through
the inhibition of the enzyme tyrosinase
>Increasing dermal (skin) fibroblast
numbers
In January 2008, Marinova began a two-year,
$1.5 million research program, supported by the Australian government to
investigate the benefits of fucoidan as both an oral and topical ingredient.
Initial results of the program have demonstrated enzyme-inhibitory activity at very low concentrations, particularly in combating glycation, which is the process of elastin and collagen degradation commonly associated with a loss of skin elasticity and the physical signs of aging.
Total
effect
Various experiments and studies have found
that fucoidan provides the following functions:
(1) Lowering of cholesterol level
(2) Suppression of blood coagulation
(thrombosis)
(3) Suppression of blood-pressure elevation
(hypertension)
(4) Anti-pylori-bacterial action and
improvement of epigastric distress
(5) Suppression of blood-sugar elevation
(6) Mitigation of allergies such as hay
fever
(7) Improvement of adverse conditions within
the intestines
(8) Adjustment of immune imbalance
(9) Improvement of liver function
(10) Regulation of bowel movements
(11) Prevention of anaemia
(12) Prevention of aging
Side effects and safety of Fucoidan(Brown Seaweed
extract)
Toxicological evaluation of fucoidan
extracted from Laminaria japonica in Wistar rats.
Food Chem Toxicol. 2005.
Investigating the toxicity of fucoidan. In
this study, the acute and subchronic (6 months) toxicity of varying levels of
fucoidan extracted from Laminaria japonica was investigated in Wistar rats
after oral administration. The results showed that no significant toxicological
changes were observed when 300 mg/kg body weight per day fucoidan was
administered to rats. But when the dose was increased to 900 and 2500 mg/kg
body weight per day, the clotting time was significantly prolonged. Besides
this, no other signs of toxicity were observed. Based on these results, it can
be concluded that the no side effect level of fucoidan from L. japonica is 300
mg/kg body weight per day.
Supplementing with brown seaweed may increase your risk for thyroid disease, according to a study published in the September 2003 issue of the journal "Endocrine Practice." In the study, healthy participants who consumed four kelp capsules per day for four weeks showed significantly increased levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone. All levels returned to normal within two weeks of stopping the kelp supplements.
Dosage of Fucoidan(Brown Seaweed extract) supplement:
Because dietary supplements and foods are not required to seek approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), studies to find the safest and most effective dosages for dietary supplements or foods are rarely performed. Without such studies, only vague "trial and error" information is typically available. Even if good dosing information were available, there may be significant variability of the content, purity, and strength among different brands of the same dietary supplement, making consistently safe and effective dosing difficult.
