What is Sage?
Sage(Salvia Officinalis) is a small,
perennial, evergreen sub shrub, with woody stems, greyish leaves, and blue to
purplish flowers. It is a member of the family Lamiaceae and is native to the
Mediterranean region, though it has naturalized in many places throughout the
world.
Its use in history dates back to the ancient
Greek times where this herb was used for copious ailments (examples include and
are definitely not limited to insomnia, measles, seasickness, venereal disease
and worms). Physicians in ancient Greece used a solution of sage and water to
stop wounds from bleeding and to clean sores and ulcers.
According to traditional Chinese medicine, be used for clearing heat and promoting diuresis, promoting blood circulation to restore menstrual flow, detumescence by detoxification.
Chemical constituents of Sage

Abstract
Salvia officinalis (Common sage, Culinary sage) is an aromatic plant that is frequently used as a spice in Mediterranean cookery and in the food industry and as a traditional medicine for the treatment of several infectious diseases. The essential oils were obtained by two different methods [hydrodistillation (HD) and microwave (Mw)] from the aerial part of S. officinalis L. growing wild in Ourika - Marrakech in Morocco. Ourika is a large zone of the Atlas Mountains which is considered as a large reserve of Flora, especially medicinal and aromatic plants. The obtained oils were analysed by gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and compared with that of Tunisia. Thirty-six compounds were identified from the Mw-extracted oil which accounted for 97.32% of the total oil composition. However, 33 compounds obtained by HD representing 98.67%. The major components were trans-thujone (14.10% and 29.84%), 1,8-cineole (5.10% and 16.82%), camphor (4.99% and 9.14%), viridiflorol (16.42% and 9.92%), β-caryophyllene (19.83% and 5.20%) and α-humulene (13.54% and 4.02%). Antibacterial, allelopathic (% germination in lettuce seeds and inhibited root growth obtained after treatment with S. officinalis oils) and antioxidant (IC50 values 22 mg/mL) activities were studied

Abstract
The sage components linalyl acetate (Ly) and alpha-terpineol (Te) exhibit synergistic anti-proliferative effects. We investigated the effects of Ly and Te on NF-kappaB signaling in HCT-116 colon cancer cells. Ly and Te combinations dose-dependently reduced HCT-116 viability at non-cytotoxic concentrations. Combination treatment induced 30%-60% increase in PreG1 through induction of apoptosis and necrosis. DNA binding assays revealed that combination treatment suppressed both basal and TNF-alpha-induced NF-kappaB activation. This suppression correlated with the inhibition of p65 nuclear translocation and IkappaB-alpha degradation. The lack of change in IKK expression levels or inhibition in IkappaB-alpha phosphorylation suggest the involvement of an IKK-independent mechanism. Ly and Te combination was found to downregulate the expression of NF-kappaB-regulated antiapoptotic and proliferative gene products. Separate treatments and drug combinations significantly decreased DNA binding activity of NF-kappaB which led to the potentiation of cell death induced by the colon cancer drugs oxaliplatin and 5-FU. These results indicate that Ly and Te anticancer activities are partly mediated through the suppression of NF-kappaB activation, suggesting their use in combination with chemotherapeutic agents to induce apoptosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES:
Evaluation of the efficacy and safety of
Salvia officinalis L. (S. officinalis) leaf extract in the treatment of
hyperlipidemic type 2 diabetic patients.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:
Fasting blood levels of glucose,
glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-C (low
density lipoprotein cholesterol), HDL-C (high density lipoprotein cholesterol),
SGOT (serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase), SGPT (serum glutamic-pyruvic
transaminase) and creatinine.
RESULTS:
The extract lowered fasting glucose, HbA1c, total cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL-C but increased HDL-C compared to baseline at endpoint. Percent difference mean (95% confidence interval) between the extract and placebo groups in terms of effects on fasting glucose, HbA1c, total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-C and HDL-C at endpoint were 32.2 (26.5, 37.9), 22.7 (16.8, 28.6), 16.9 (9.7, 24.1), 56.4 (36.1, 76.7), 35.6 (29.9, 41.3) and 27.6 (15.8, 39.4) (P=0.001, P=0.01, P=0.01, P=0.009, P<0.001 and P=0.008), respectively. Moreover, the extract did not have any significant effects on the other parameters compared to the placebo group at endpoint (P>0.05). No adverse effects were reported.
