What is Feather Cockscomb (Celosia
argentea ) Seed Extract?
Celosia argentea, commonly known as cockscomb, plumed is a plant of tropical origin, and is known for its very bright colors.
Celosia argentea is a tender
annual that is often grown in gardens. It is propagated by seeds. The seeds are
extremely small, up to 43,000 seeds per ounce.
The Century cultivars are usually taller (1–2 feet), and are bright red, yellow, orange, or pink. The Kimono cultivars are generally smaller (4 inches - 1 foot), and have more muted colors, though similar to the Century cultivars. Other colors, such as white, burgundy, orange-red, etc., can be found. Certain varieties will grow to 3–4 feet in height.
The sweet and cool herb has been used in TCM to stop nose bleeding, painful and swollen eyes, superficial visual obstruction, cataracts as a result of wind-heat or liver fire, etc. as it disperses and eliminates Liver-Fire, improves vision, etc., by enhancing the functions of liver channels.

Extract supplements:
Traditional Chinese medicine
>Drains liver fire, clears
wind heat, improves vision - either wind-heat or liver fire causing red,
painful eyes, superficial visual obstruction, and cataracts (stronger effect
than Mi Meng Hua for excess fire).

combine with Jue Ming Zi and Mi Meng Hua.
>Hypertension due to liver yang rising.
Modern Medicine
Feather Cockscomb (Celosia argentea ) Seed and Hepatotoxicity
>Two new compounds from
Semen celosiae and their protective effects against CCl₄-induced
hepatotoxicity.

Abstract
Two new oleanolic acid
saponins, namely celosin A (1) and celosin B (2), together with six known
compounds, stigmasterol, β-sitosterol, β-daucosterol, hexacosoic acid, palmitic
acid and stearic acid, were isolated from the ethanolic extract of Semen
celosiae. The structures of celosin A (1) and celosin B (2) were determined by
spectral analysis (including 1D- and 2D-NMR). The hepatoprotective activity of
1 and 2 with oral doses 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 mg kg⁻¹ were investigated by carbon
tetrachloride CCl₄-induced hepatotoxicity in mice. The results indicate that
they have significant hepatoprotective effects, and that these hepatoprotective
effects may be due to the antioxidant capability.
Allergic disorders
>Effects of Celosia
argentea and Cucurbita moschata extracts on anti-DNP IgE antibody production in
mice
(Source-Health Science
Laboratories, Yamanouchi Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd.)
Abstract
We have already reported that
the Perilla frutescens extract (PFE) suppressed anti-DNA IgE antibody
production in mice. In this study, we prepared extracts of Celosia argentea L.
(CAE) and Cucurbita moschata Duch (CME), which are Chinese herbal medicines
like Perilla frutescens, and examined the effects on anti-DNP antibody
responses in mice. To examine the effects of CAE & CME on primary antibody
responses, CAE & CME were intraperitoneally injected the day before primary
immunization of DNP-ovalbumin. Anti-DNP antibody production was markedly
suppressed. Then, we examined the effects on secondary antibody responses. CEA
& CME were injected only the day before secondary immunization. Anti-DNP
IgE production was markedly suppressed, but IgG responses were not affected. It
was also found that mitogenic activity occurred in CAE & CME dose
dependently in vitro. These effects of CAE & CME were superior to that of
PFE. These results suggest that CAE & CME may be more useful than PFE for
the suppression of IgE antibody in certain allergic disorders.

Abstract
Celosia argentea Linn. commonly known as "Cocks Comb" and its seeds are widely used in Indian folk medicine for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of an alcoholic extract of Celosia argentea seeds (ACAS) on blood glucose and body weight in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. ACAS was found to reduce the increase of blood glucose in alloxan-induced diabetic rats (27.8% at 250 mg/kg and 38.8% at 500 mg/kg body weight). Chronic administration of ACAS significantly (p<0.01) reduced the blood glucose in alloxan-induced diabetic rats for two weeks. Also the extract prevented a decrease in body weight in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. These results suggest that the ACAS possesses anti-diabetic activity in alloxan-induced diabetic rats.
